Hamish Frankland - MSA application

From a young age my surroundings, in particular the built environment, have always left a huge impression on me. One of my earliest memories is walking around Manchester being amazed by these beautiful tall buildings over me. Since then architecture has had an increasingly larger impact on me. Manchester has always had a hold on me, I love the architecture here being a big fan of the Beetham Tower, the people that live here seem to love this city and I really want to be a part of that. The other reason I chose MSA was the fantastic facilities you can offer as well as your brilliant staff that imbued in me the confidence to place my education in their hands.

I was recently fortunate enough to be able to attend the Egon Schiele exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery in London. Schiele has been my favorite fine artist for some time, he has been a huge influence on my work in recent years. Initially I was underwhelmed by the work on show - it was much smaller than I had expected but as I spent more time there I realized that because it wasn't overwhelming it allowed you to really see the skill on show, appreciate the amazing coloring and understand the importance of his work.

There are several architects who have really stood out to me in the last few years including Frank Lloyd Wright, Norman Foster and Adrian Smith but none have touched me the way Mies van der Rohe has. His creations are simply beautiful, he displayed an unparalleled level of foresight with each of his buildings, the true master of his craft. Such is the genius of his design that they remain modern, functional and relevant even today. This is epitomised in the Seagram Building which I think is just gorgeous, I've never been inside but I did visit when I was in New York City. The level of class and maturity on display is truly moving in a way only great architecture can be. I hope one day I can witness the fabled interior and be blown away again.

From what I have experienced of this World I think every century or so there comes along a truly great building and in my opinion none more so than Fallingwater. Based on the images I have seen I think it is perfection. So unbelievably well balanced with its surroundings, so clean and pure. It's because of this elegance that it would be my building of choice to visit.
